Hillsides Receives $5,000 Grant from Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts
5.17.18

LOS ANGELES, May 16, 2018 -- Hillsides, a Southern California mental health and foster care charity, has received a $5,000 grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA). The grant will fund Hillsides music education program. The music program provides music classes and enrichment activities to the students of Hillsides Education Center, a therapeutic 1-12 school for children with social-emotional, learning, and/or behavioral challenges.

“We are thankful that once again, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is supporting our music program,” said Hillsides Chief Advancement Officer Carrie Espinoza. “Research has shown that music education boosts children’s cognitive and social skills, especially in the areas of language, emotional intelligence and self-regulation.  It is perfect timing that these funds will dovetail with the soon-to-be opening of our new Margie & Robert E. Petersen Student Center on the Hillsides Education Center campus that will feature a new music room.”

Espinoza accepted the grant at a grantee reception held at the 54rd Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

Each year, the PSHA awards gifts and grants to a diverse list of nonprofit organizations to support their efforts in the community. Over the years, gifts and grants have included music education at all levels, music therapy for at-risk children, the underwriting of concerts, the purchase of instruments and uniforms, as well as other art programs.

The 2018 Showcase House, called “The Overlook,” is a majestic Mediterranean masterpiece designed by the distinguished architect Reginald Davis Johnson. It was constructed in 1915 at a cost of $14,000 for widowed sisters Ruth Hargrove and Mary Emma Baker.

The Showcase House will be on display until May 20. Tickets are available online at PasadenaShowcase.org or by calling 714-442-3872. Tickets cost between $35-$45.
