Family Resource Centers

Families struggling through crises or challenging situations know they can find experienced practitioners who are responsive, accessible, and compassionate. Hillsides offers numerous community-based programs and services through several Hillsides Family Resource Centers in Los Angeles County. These centers provide parenting classes, mental health support, and additional crucial resources for vulnerable children and families. We also provide in-home counseling to families at risk who are unable to access the services in our resource centers. We intervene before children are removed from their homes in order to preserve families, help them begin to recover, and create secure, permanent living environments. In addition, we offer school-based mental health services in the Pasadena, Los Angeles, Baldwin Park, and Glendale/Burbank school districts because children's needs are often first detected in the school setting. We turn obstacles into opportunities to restore hope and honor the inherent integrity of each individual in every family.

Getting services at Hillsides just got easier with a new centralized intake number for residential and outpatient mental health services. The new intake number is (323) 274-3075.

Full Service Partnerships

Full Service Partnerships, a program provided through the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and available at Hillsides Family Resource Centers, provide comprehensive, intensive mental health services for children and transition aged youth and their families in their homes and communities.

Hillsides, along with partner agencies, provides in-home community support and therapeutic services for children (ages 0 to 15) and transition-aged youth (ages 16 to 25) who suffer from severe emotional disturbances and/or substance abuse problems and who are at high risk for removal from their home, expulsion from school, homelessness, or  incarceration. The program is aimed at "doing whatever it takes" to help individuals make progress on their paths to recovery and wellness.

Family Preservation

Family Preservation is a program designed to protect children by strengthening and preserving families whose children are at risk of experiencing trauma and exploitation. It promotes the physical, emotional, social, educational, cultural and spiritual growth of children in safe, caring family homes. Some of the services offered in our Family preservation program include in-home outreach counseling, child-focused activities, parent training and substitute adult role model training, teaching and demonstrating homemaker skills, transportation, court-approved parenting classes and referrals to a wide array of services.

The Family Preservation program is available to some families already in DCFS, and therefore, self-referrals or outside referrals cannot be accepted. If a family is in the DCFS system and feels they can benefit from the program, members need to speak to their children’s social worker (CSW). If a family is eligible and willing to make a commitment to the program, the case may be accepted. There are DCFS variables that determine eligibility.

The CalWORKS program, which stands for California Work Opportunities and Responsibilities to Kids, offers temporary support during challenging times for families with children. Hillsides staff focuses on finding jobs and removing barriers to employment so clients can become self-sufficient in addition to providing mental health treatment such as individual and family therapy, psychiatric services, case management, domestic violence groups, and substance abuse groups.

School-Based Services

School-based services provide comprehensive mental health services to children in a school setting. Hillsides also offers crisis counseling for students who experience extreme trauma in their homes, community, or school. Students who receive school-based services have the potential to be more successful in school, at home, and in social settings.

Therapeutic Behavior Services

Therapeutic Behavior Services offer short-term, intensive one-on-one services to children and is used with other treatment modalities such as individual therapy, group therapy and medication support. A trained therapeutic behavior specialist works with a child in the school, community, and home, setting attainable behavioral goals. The specialist then meets with the child and the caregivers to reach these goals.

Intern Training Program

Since 1986, the Intern Training Program has trained more than 300 interns from various disciplines, which include MFT and MSW interns, doctoral students, and postdoctoral candidates. We provide a broad base of clinical experience and training during a year commitment. Students receive an intensive two-week orientation followed by an assignment to the Family Resource Centers, committing to a 16- or 20-hour-per week program, in which they provide intake and assessment, group, individual, and family therapy, case management, psychodiagnostic testing, and client advocacy.
